John Bishop is a barrister practising mainly in Kent and London, with a tenancy at 10, King’s Bench Walk, Temple, London EC4Y 7EB. As well as being available to be instructed by solicitors in the usual way, he is licensed by the Bar Standards Board to undertake Direct Public Access work for companies or members of the public wishing to come direct to a barrister.
Called to the Bar in 1970, John worked as a law lecturer and travelled extensively before commencing practice in 1977. He was for several years head of a set of chambers at 7, Stone Buildings, Lincoln’s Inn, where he undertook a wide range of civil and criminal work at every level up to the High Court and Court of Appeal. In addition, in 1989, he founded the first set of barristers’ chambers in Canterbury and since then has maintained strong links with legal work in Kent.
Civil work has encompassed a wide range of contract, including commercial and building disputes, and torts such as professional negligence and boundary disputes. John also has experience in professional disciplinary tribunals and Local Authority regulatory work.
Criminal work has covered the whole calendar of offences including murder, causing death by dangerous driving, fraud and numerous courts-martial in the United Kingdom (including Northern Ireland), Germany and Brunei. This work has recently also included various Proceeds of Crime Act cases, one of which concerned the seizure at Heathrow Airport of £690,000 in cash being shipped to Hong Kong.
